MDX (MultiDimensional Expressions) is a query language for business intelligence solutions, specifically designed to access and analyze multi-dimensional data stored in OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) cubes.
MDX was developed by Microsoft in 1997 to interact with the analytical services offered by Panorama Software, which had been acquired by Microsoft a year earlier.

In 1998, Microsoft included both the Panorama Software services and MDX in SQL Server 7, and in 2000 these services changed their name to Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS). Since then, MDX has evolved and become more robust, allowing users to perform more complex and advanced queries on their data.
Today, MDX is one of the most popular and widely used query languages in the business intelligence world, and is used in BI solutions from several vendors, including Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, and SAP.
